Modular load-distributing system for water storage and rootable volume beneath paved or green roof surfaces.
Modular load-distributing system for water storage and rootable volume beneath paved or green roof surfaces.
The UrbaCell sandwich boxes are a load-distributing and pressure-relieving system. These boxes create additional rootable volume beneath otherwise impermeable surfaces. The sandwich boxes are designed to minimize root heave; thanks to their continuous, interconnected structure, trees are less likely to cause damage to the overlying pavement.

Designed For

  • Water storage and controlled infiltration.
  • Load-distributing foundations beneath pavements.
  • Root-friendly structural layers for trees and green roofs.

Recommended Use

  • Urban landscape and streetscape projects.
  • Pedestrian areas and plazas.
  • Green roofs and rooftop gardens.
  • Areas requiring combined water management and load support.

Technical Specifications

  • Vertical load:
  • Stress under lateral load: 210 kN/m²
  • Deformation under lateral load of 27 kN/m²: <1 mm
  • Deformation under vertical load of 141 kN/m²: <1mm
  • Safety factor: 4
  • 95% fill volume
  • Load-distributing
  • Minimizes damage caused by root heave

Installation Guidelines

If installed in open ground:
(A) Excavate the construction pit and prepare the subgrade.
(B) Place the combigrid on the bedding layer.
(C) Install the crates with the required connectors.
(D) Fill the crates if necessary (from 8.5 cm and higher).
(E) Place geotextile on top.
(F) Connect the aeration system.
(G) Begin construction of the overlying pavement.

If installed on a green roof:
(A) Install the underlying membranes according to the roof build-up.
(B) Place the crates with the required connectors (perimeter placement for large green roofs, full coverage for small green roofs).
(C) Install the overflow system.
(D) Place geotextile on top.
(E)  Begin construction of the overlying green roof system.

FAQs

1. Can UrbaCell be used for existing trees?
Yes, it can be used for both existing trees and new plantings.
2. What heights are available in the system?
They are available starting from a minimum height of 5 cm. Other available heights are always 5 cm plus 3.5 cm or 5 cm, or multiples thereof (e.g., 12 cm, 13.5 cm, 15 cm, etc.).
3. What has UrbaCell been tested for?
UrbaCell has been tested for both lateral pressure and the required axle load.
4. Was a safety margin considered in relation to the warranty period?
When accounting for the natural wear of plastic materials, a safety margin must always be included. This safety margin ensures that the material remains sufficiently strong, even with a reduction in strength over time. A safety factor of 4 has been applied, while others typically use 1.4, in accordance with the German technical standard ATV-DVWK-A 127 – Table 3: Material characteristic values – Footnote (14).
5. How is transport handled?
The crates are delivered pre-assembled per unit.
6. How easy is the installation process?
Thanks to its lightweight and modular system, installing and constructing the sandwich structure is very straightforward. Due to the rectangular dimensions of 600 × 500 mm, there is significantly less material waste, as you can work efficiently with multiples of 60 and 50 cm. Upon delivery, a laying plan/direction plan is provided. We also provide an installation manual to ensure everything runs smoothly. It is very important to always connect all crates to each other using the supplied coupling pieces.
